Mexican National Sentenced to Federal Prison on His Birthday

United States Attorney Johnny Sutton announced that in El Paso, Ramon Aguirre-Gueta, a 23-year-old Mexican national, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Frank Montalvo to 64 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to robbing the Greater El Paso Credit Union earlier this year and illegal re-entry after deportation. In addition to the prison term, Judge Montalvo also ordered the defendant to pay $843.00 restitution to GECU.

On March 17, 2008, Aguirre approached a bank teller, handed the teller a note indicating that he was armed, and demanded money. The bank teller complied with his demand. Aguirre left the credit union and ultimately fled to Mexico. On April 12, 2008, Aguirre-Gueta voluntarily surrendered to Customs and Border Protection officers at the Paso Del Norte Port of Entry. Immigration records reveal that Aguirre was deported in March 2006 following a federal conviction in El Paso for illegal re-entry. The defendant pleaded guilty to the bank robbery and illegal re-entry charges on July 15, 2008.

The case was investigated by Federal Bureau of Investigation together with the El Paso Police Department and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Assistant United States Attorney William F. Lewis, Jr. prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
