FORMER WILLIAM BEAUMONT ARMY MEDICAL CENTER EMPLOYEE INDICTED FOR STEALING PATIENTS’ DRUGS

United States Attorney Johnny Sutton announced today that 45-year-old John Dale Jones was indicted and has been arrested on federal charges of assault and acquiring possession of a controlled substance by misrepresentation. The defendant was arrested in Miami, Florida, and had a bond hearing today. The defendant will have to appear in El Paso, Texas, to face the federal charges. His arraignment on the charges in El Paso has not been scheduled at this time.

According to the indictment, beginning in August 2004 and continuing through October 2004, while employed at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, Jones diverted a controlled substance, known as Fentanyl, from patients undergoing surgery, for his own use.

This case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service. It is being prosecuted for the government by Assistant United States Attorney Bill Lewis and Patricia Acosta.

A indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence of guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until convicted through due process of law.
